Chapter Thirteen
Thick gray clouds gathered in the next afternoon, high above the lodge, fat with more snow. She could smell the pungent odor of dampness and pine filtering in the wind. When the first spotting of a snowflake landed, Jared and Brett shut down the ski runs, and the mountain grumbled in protest.
With so many staying inside the lodge, Amber helped Rose Marie bus tables after the noon day meal. Children were brought into the dining hall to play games. Still wearing Brett’s flannel shirt, she rolled up the sleeves and pressed a fist to her heart as she watched them.
Several times she spotted Brayden standing alongside his ski instructor, a man Rose Marie introduced to her as Chayton. The kids had been given ropes and taught how to tie knots. The younger children played tag, racing around the tables. Twice Amber had to step out of the way rather than get plowed over by one of them. She and Rose Marie laughed, but before they could retreat to the kitchen, Brett and Jared returned to the dining hall.
He grinned at her and she recalled their sleepless night. A warmth spread through her as he came near her, weaving his way around the children. She noted the way he paused to let a child run past, and how he paused for a moment to see what a small girl sat drawing in a sketch book. His eyes always coming back to her.
She bit back a smile as Rose Marie leaned toward her. “I take it the captive is now the captor?”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“You captured his spirit. It is written plain as day on his face.”
Rose Marie’s words sent a sickening feeling in the pit of Amber’s stomach. They left the cabin for the noon meal. Brett wouldn’t have had time to tell the others about her, or would he? She figured she could trust Rose Marie, but in telling others about her ability put them in danger. She clutched her belly feeling like she would vomit.
“Amber are you okay?” Rose Marie wiped off the last of the tables with her damp cloth.
“You’re pale, what happened?” Instantly, Brett appeared at her side. Amber took a deep breath and before she could protest, Rose Marie pulled out a chair for her.
“I’m fine.” She closed her eyes to fight back the wave of nauseous causing her brain to swim in her head.
“Sure, if you’re a ghost.” Rose Marie chided. “I’ll get you some pie, I think there is coconut left over and good strong cup of coffee. You probably haven’t eaten enough.”
“After your pie, I’ll take you to see Mitch.” Brett took her hand, turned it over, and pressed the palm to his lips.
“No. I’m not going to see your brother again.” Her bleeding finger had healed, but she hadn’t like the intention of his examination trying to get her to shed her clothes and put on a gown. She refused to take her pants off for a cut finger, nor allow him to see the other wounds she carried from her time at Windham.
